Rhinoplasty at Dr. Carlos Illich Navarro practice is surgery that modifies the shape of the nose, and is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in plastic surgery.

“Rhinoplasty can decrease or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip or back, narrow the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip” says Dr. Carlos Illich Navarro

Rhinoplasty also corrects congenital problems, trauma, and some respiratory problems.

Rhinoplasty Surgery

Nose surgery is always performed in the operating room, within a clinic or hospital. Normally, you stay in the clinic the night after surgery, and are discharged the next day.

Rhinoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia plus sedation, or more commonly, general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the surgery and your surgeon’s preferences. If it is performed with local anesthesia plus sedation, the patient feels relaxed and the nose and its surroundings are insensitive to pain; With general anesthesia the patient is asleep during the operation.

A nose surgery usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours, although in complex cases it may take longer. During surgery, the skin of the nose is separated from its support, made up of bone and cartilage, which is sculpted into the desired shape.

Finally the skin is redistributed over this new support. Many plastic surgeons perform this procedure from inside the nose, making small incisions inside the nostrils; Others prefer to do an open rhinoplasty, especially for more complex cases, in which a small incision is made in the columella.

When the surgery is completed, a cast of plaster or other material is placed, which will help maintain the new shape of the nose. Nasal plugs are also placed in both nostrils to prevent bleeding and stabilize the nasal septum.

Rhinoplasty Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidates for rhinoplasty are those seeking improvement, rather than absolute perfection, in their appearance.

If you are in good general health, psychologically stable, and realistic in your expectations, you will be a good candidate.

Rhinoplasty will improve your appearance and self-confidence, but it will not make you look like someone else or be treated differently. Before deciding whether to have rhinoplasty, think about what you want to achieve and discuss it with your plastic surgeon.

Age must also be taken into account. Most plastic surgeons prefer not to perform a rhinoplasty until the “growth spurt” has occurred, that is, until the age of 14 or 15 in girls and slightly older for boys.
